Student Group Requests More Safety Measures In Sports

The Youth Sports Alliance has requested more safety measure for high school students that participate in sports.  They have requested that schools should update their facilities,  train coaches in CPR and injuries and have plans for emergencies.

There were about 7.6 million kids participating in sports last year.  Even though sports related deaths have declined in the past few years there were still about 34 deaths and many more concussions. This is due  to a law in 43 states that requires a student that suffers a concussion to bring a note from a doctor that it is OK to return.  However much more still needs to be done in order to make it safe.  Only about one third of all schools currently employ full time certified athletic trainers.  The Youth Sports Alliance wants that changed so that it should be mandatory for all schools to have an athletic trainer or doctor on board.  They would also like to see students getting physical exams before the season starts.
