Notre Dames linebacker Manti Te'o fell for a online relationship with a woman named Lennay Kekuah which turned out to be a hoax. According to NFL.com it looks like that he wasn't the only one to fall for a fake relationship. A poster that was hung up on the Washington Redskins locker room stated that they should be careful and stay away from a certain Twitter account that was operated by a woman claiming to be Sidney Ackerman. She used photos from C. J. Miles an adult entertainer. The Facebook and Twitter accounts from her were deleted as soon as she found out that she was being investigated. However according to NFL.com this was not the only Twitter account that targeted football players. There was one that also used photos from C. J. Miles and one that had 22 NFL players and 6 NBA players that were following it. All of this raises the question about the influence of social media and how careful one should be when starting online relationships. It is extremely easy for anyone to claim that they are someone that they are not and hurting people that do want to have normal relationships. Caution should always be used when talking to someone you don’t know personally until you can verify if the person operating the account is who they are claiming to be.
